WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — The Warner Robins Demonettes flag football team traveled to Houston County High School Thursday and squared off against the Lady Bears.

Coming into the game on a five-game win streak, the Demonettes, whose prolific offense can put up some points, were looking to extend their win streak. Flag football is in its second year in Houston County, and the competition is getting stiff.

Tasia Agee, the starting quarterback for Warner Robins, is a great athlete. Also a member of the girls’ basketball team, she contributed on both sides of the field, throwing for several touchdowns and making a pivotal interception in the second half, killing Houston County’s momentum and shutting down the drive.

Houston County received the opening kickoff, but they couldn’t do much with the ball on their opening drive, so they had to punt it away to Warner Robins.

Looking to make a statement on their opening drive, Warner Robins went for it on fourth and goal, after putting together a nice drive. But they couldn’t convert, and Houston County took over near the two-yard line. Smelling blood, Warner Robins sent the blitz, and they managed to catch Houston County off guard as a player came free and tackled the runner in the end zone, resulting in a safety. This put Warner Robins up 2-0, and they got the call back on the kickoff.

They couldn’t do much on the ensuing possession, however, and they punted back to Houston County.

Warner Robins’ defense was on point all game, and they were flying around the field, breaking up passes and shutting down the run. After holding Houston County again, Warner Robins got the ball back and Tasia Agee hit Jada Morgan on a long pass, setting up first down deep inside Houston County territory. Agee connected with Chelsea Thomas for another first down before hitting Morgan again for the touchdown, putting Warner Robins up, 8-0. They converted the extra point to make it 9-0.

Attempting to get something going, Houston County put in another quarterback, Harlee Blasche, but they couldn’t seem to get to manufacture any offense against the stout defense of Warner Robins.

In the second half, Houston County’s defense was playing well, and Maisah Abdul-Khaliq knocked down several of Agee’s passes, nearly intercepting one of them to force fourth down. They forced Warner Robins to punt on their opening possession, but Warner Robins, thanks to an interception by Tasia Agee, shut down Houston County’s drive.

Cailsey Crawford, Houston County’s starting quarterback, was making plays with her feet and starting to find receivers — they were putting some plays together, and they moved the chains, but the interception was costly. Houston County’s defense continued to play well, and they were pressuring Agee in the second half. Ella Wilkerson managed to sack Agee, forcing fourth down. However, after putting together another drive, Jada Morgan read the route perfectly and jumped in front of one of Crawford’s passes, intercepting it, and she took it all the back to the house for the pick-six, putting Warner Robins in control 16-0 after the extra point conversion attempt was hauled in by Amelia Alonso.

With 2:22 left to go in the game, Houston County couldn’t move the ball against Warner Robins’ tough defense. They went for it on fourth and long, but Warner Robins knocked down the pass, sealing the victory.

“We were kind of distracted a little bit,” Bryan Watts said, the head coach of Warner Robins flag football. “But not taking anything away from Houston County, they played great. They had some good offensive schemes; they played great defense; they held us under what we expected to score. I feel thankful that we played hard enough to win.”

After defeating Houston County, the Demonettes remain undefeated and improve to 6-0 on the season. They will play Northside (Columbus) on Monday in Demon Valley. Coach Watts is in position to make a run.

Last season, Warner Robins went 5-3, but this season they are playing lights out. We’ll have to see if they can remain undefeated.
