Warner Robins boys’ basketball opens season with a bang, takes down Bears
WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — After going deep into the playoffs last season, the Warner Robins Demons are looking to get back on the path to glory and bring home that state title. They faced Houston County at home Wednesday, and though they displayed a little bit of rust early on, the Demons eventually took care of Houston County, winning 52-35.
The Demons started out hot on defense, and they were keeping the pressure on Houston County. Trey Bradley and G’Ron Mack led the way with two steals each. Houston County came out looking a little tight, and they missed some shots early, but Kameron Plummer was able to knock down a three-pointer from behind the arc.
Warner Robins jumped out to a 14-5 lead in the first period, and Bradley, who scored nine points and had six rebounds in the game, was getting position in the paint, allowing him to get the offensive rebounds and clean up the plays.
Daniel Stokes, the center for Houston County, made his presence known in the second quarter, on both offense and defense. He had a steal, which led to a basket, and then he rocked the rim with a two-handed slam, pumping up the Houston County crowd.
Warner Robins point guard Cam Perkins was all over the floor, and led the team in scoring with 15 points. He also had four rebounds and four assists. Warner Robins was able to spread the ball out, and they had good ball movement, keeping the Houston County defense off balance. Dru May led the Demons in rebounds, and he had eight points on the night.
Houston County was able to pull within 10 points in the second half, but Warner Robins was just too strong in the end, and they pulled away in the fourth quarter. This was a good opening test for Warner Robins, and they are looking to build off the success from the previous season.
“It felt good tonight, first game straight out,” Warner Robins Coach Jamaal Garman said. “A lot of things we got to work on, but I’m glad we got the opportunity to get the win, always want to get that win. It was a good performance from our guys tonight, but I want great.”
When asked about what the team needs to focus on to repeat the success of last season, Coach Garman stated, “We definitely have to get better at the rebounding end of it, on offense and defense, definitely that, and shooting the ball a bit better. But that’s going to come over time, you know. We’re not going to rush that process — it’s only Game One. We have 22 more left, so we have a long way to go, but I like what I’m seeing right now — it’s looking good.”
Warner Robins will play Baldwin Saturday, and then they will play Locust Grove in their first region game next Tuesday. We’ll see if Warner Robins can keep the win streak going, but they are off to a great start.
