Warhawks sweep Bears on the road
WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — The Veterans Warhawks (11-5) flew into the Bears’ Den on Saturday, and left with a successful sweep of the Houston County Bears (9-8).
The boys won in a close 74-71 contest, with senior wing Ezekiel Carswell putting the game away with a clutch free throw.
Senior guard Antionio “Tone” Scott intercepted a long inbounds pass in the final seconds to seal Veterans’ victory.
“No one gets a night off in this league,” Head coach Chip Flemmer said post-game.
Though the ‘Hawks led much of the game, the Bears were never far behind.
Despite getting more shots to fall in the first quarter, Veterans only led 14-12 after the first quarter as HoCo drained several shots from deep.
The teams continued to trade baskets throughout the second, and though the score was tied at multiple points throughout the period, the ‘Hawks led 38-32 at the break.
The Bears flipped the script in the third quarter to take their first lead of the game. They entered the final quarter up 57-50.
Veterans clawed back during the fourth quarter, and a three from junior guard Aiden Sweenor put the ‘Hawks up one with a minute eft in the game.
HoCo pulled back even, but Scott was fouled as he drove the lane, and he made both free throws to give Veterans a two-point lead with 42 seconds left.
Junior forward Tristen Abner, as is his specialty, secured a rebound and drilled both foul shots to give the ‘Hawks a four-point lead.
HoCo scored on their next trip down the court before Carswell sealed the game with his free throws.
Lady Warhawks 61, Lady Bears 22
Things started slow for the Veterans Lady Warhawks (11-5) in their drubbing of the Houston County Lady Bears (6-8), but by halftime the outcome wasn’t in question.
The first quarter ended with the Lady ‘Hawks on top 17-8, and by the time halftime rolled around their lead had blossomed to 44-13.
The third quarter saw more of a defensive battle from both teams, but Veterans maintained their lead at 19-16.
As the final quarter ticked on the Lady ‘Hawks continued to outpace the Lady Bears, and the buzzer sounded with their 61-22 victory.
Head coach Randall Owens said he was proud of all of his players, particularly his second and third string during the blowout.
Their play was no surprise to him with the effort and hard work they put into practice, now able to apply it to a game.
