Walker among speakers at spring Flint River FCA banquet April 18

Herschel Walker and Leah O’Brien-Amico will be the featured speakers at the Flint River Fellowship of Christian Athletes spring banquet to be held on Thursday, April 18, at 6:30 pm at the Miller-Murphy Howard Building at the Georgia National Fairgrounds. Since 1954, and as the largest Christian sports organization in the world, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes has been challenging coaches and athletes on the professional, college, high school, junior high and youth levels to use the powerful medium of athletics to impact the world for Jesus Christ.

Herschel Walker played for the University of Georgia where he led the team to the 1980 national championship. He earned All American honors three times and in 1982 was awarded the Heisman Trophy. He is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame and was selected to the Sports Illustrated’s NCAA Football All-Century Team. He played in the USFL and NFL before retiring in 1997.

Leah O’Brien-Amico helped to lead the Arizona Wildcats to three national softball championships. She holds the Women’s College World Series Record for batting average in a single tournament; hitting .750 (9 for 12) in 1994. As a member of the United States softball team, she earned gold medals at the 1996, 2000, and 2004 Olympics. She now works in ministry and has covered softball for ESPN.

The Spring Banquet is a primary fundraiser for the Flint River FCA which serves coaches and athletes in an area that encompasses Houston, Peach, Macon, Taylor, and Crawford counties and includes 22 middle and high schools along with Fort Valley State University. With a focused passion on blending faith and athletics, all students on campus are welcome and encouraged to attend FCA. 100 percent of the organization’s budget is raised by local support to fund programs like Bible distribution and study material for coaches, athletes and team sports. A large majority of the money raised during the Spring Banquet will be used to scholarship coaches and athletes to FCA summer camps.

Daryl McElwain, Area Director for Flint River FCA, said that the impact of attending a FCA summer sports camp can be far reaching.

“If they’ve never had the opportunity to experience Jesus, this will truly introduce them to Christ,” said McElwain. “For those who are already Christians and attend camp, they will be encouraged, strengthened, and equipped in their relationship with Christ and others…and return with a passion to reach and influence their campus for Jesus Christ.”

Individual tickets are now on sale along with table and corporate sponsorship opportunities that can be found on the Flint River FCA website – (flintriverfca.org). A meet and greet with Herschel Walker and Leah O’Brien-Amico is available at the pre-banquet reception.
