VHS Lady Warhawks passes first test of the season, 8-0 over Howard

The softball season officially began on Tuesday night for the Veterans High School Lady Warhawks and by the looks of things not much has changed from last year’s dominant team. Veterans defeated visiting Howard High School 8-0 behind strong pitching, even better defense and four-run fourth inning. Emily Myers pitched a complete game striking out seven Lady Huskies without giving up a run.

Though just the first game of the season and in front of their home crowd, Tuesday night was a good indication of the kind of team head coach Davis Coffey has this season. “It’s great to watch the team’s hard work over the summer come to fruition,” said Coffey after the game. “There is a lot of talent on this team from top to bottom.”

Scoreless after two innings, Veterans found their bats in the third inning scoring the first run of the game off of a wild pitch and the next on a fielder’s choice. An inning later the flood gates opened for the home team as another Howard wild pitch would assist in scoring another Veterans base runner from third sandwiched between RBI singles and an error at first base.

The fifth inning would be the last of the game for Howard as Veterans tacked on two more runs courtesy of another Lady Huskies error, at first base again, followed by aggressive base running that put Lady Warhawks in scoring position.

“It’s fun watching these young ladies go out and compete at a high level, we just have to continue working hard at practice and polish up a few areas,” said Coffey. The Lady Warhawks had a tough time completing double-plays during the first and third inning. “I’m very proud of this team so far.”

Veterans is off until Monday when they play at Perry followed by games at Mt. De Sales Academy on Tuesday and in Ellaville at Schley County High School on Wednesday.
