Veterans sweeps visiting Swainsboro
KATHLEEN, Ga. — The Veterans Warhawks (3-2) needed time to warm up before clobbering the visiting Swainsboro Tigers (0-1) 81-49 on Tuesday.
Head coach Chip Flemmer compared his team to a diesel engine after the game, in the fact that once they got going they ran like a well oiled machine.
In the first minute of the game the Tigers took a 5-0 lead, but the Warhawks started to get it in gear over the next six minutes, and with a minute left in the first quarter they led 16-10.
The Warhawks continued to control the game through the second quarter and halfway through they led 29-21.
Over the next four minutes Veterans outscored Swainsboro 14-3 to take a commanding 43-24 lead into halftime.
The engine continued to run well going into the third and by the end the starters were resting and the Warhawks led 60-34.
Though the starters came back in to start the fourth, as the lead bloomed to 30 they headed back to the bench for the rest of the game.
Lady Warhawks 50, Lady Tigers 39
The Veterans Lady Warhawks (3-3) took the court against the Swainsboro Lady Tigers (0-1) on Tuesday to get back up to .500.
The Lady ‘Hawks started strong and led all but the last two seconds of the first quarter as the Lady Tigers went ahead 13-12 as they scored the last six points of the period.
Their defense stiffened up in the second and the Lady ‘Hawks held the Lady Tigers to only five points.
Veterans uncorked a 10-0 run in the final two minutes of the first half to take a 28-18 lead into halftime.
The Lady Tigers didn’t go away, however.
With two minutes left in the third quarter they worked their way back in the game only down 33-30.
The Lady Tigers attempted to up the pressure, but the Lady ‘Hawks fought through to lead 38-34 at the end of the quarter.
Veterans continued to control the game throughout the fourth, and with 1:16 left sophomore forward Gabby Minus stole the ball and took it coast-to-coast before she was fouled. She nailed both free throws to give the Lady ‘Hawks a 50-39 lead, the final score of the night.
