Veterans Lady Warhawks are rolling and have yet to lose in 2020

There are win streaks and then there is just being

on an all out roll. The Veterans Lady Warhawks are currently experiencing the

later after winning 10 straight games coming into Friday’s region game against

Thomas County Central (6 p.m.). In fact Veterans has not lost a game in 2020.

The last time the Lady Warhawks lost -Dec. 20 to Northside- the calendar read

2019. It a streak that says a lot about the program just weeks before the

region tournament and state playoffs begin. “I think we are playing well

defensively and have made a conscious effort to lock in and do a better job on

the defensive end,” said Lady Warhawks head coach Nicole Miranda. “We’re just

keeping the opposing teams off the boards.”

Miranda is being modest. During the win streak the

Lady Warhawks have also kept their opponents from scoring much. In the 10 games

only three opposing teams (Bainbridge, Warner Robins and Houston County) have

managed to score 40 or more points with only the Demonettes scoring more than

50 points (52). “Sometimes shots don’t fall or our offense stalls for whatever

reason, but playing solid team defense allows us to continue to compete at a

high level,” said Miranda.

The Lady Warhawks’ recent run of success includes

the Mary Persons Christmas tournament title (they defeated Perry 43-21 in the

final Dec. 30) and victories over West Laurens, their biggest competition for

the 2019 Region 1-5A title Harris County and Warner Robins, and most recently

against Banbridge Tuesday. There is a good chance the Warhawks will meet most

of these teams in the postseason. “We are the pivotal time in our season and we

have a lot of basketball left to play,” said Miranda. “I am challenging the girls

each day to stay focussed, work hard as a team and take it one game at a time.”

With four seniors and four juniors in the rotation,

the Lady Warhawks have both found a way to win those close games that come down

to a key basket and an even more important defensive stop. On Jan. 7 their

40-38 victory at Harris County came down to both. “Being an experienced team

helps keep things in perspective, and at the same time we do have some big

goals we want to achieve this season,” said Miranda.

Veterans (18-2 overall and 4-0 in Region 1-5A) lost

to Buford in the Elite 8 last year.

“The road is tough, but I am excited for the

opportunity with this team,” added Miranda.

Ansley Miranda cleared for remainder of season

Veterans junior point guard Ansley Miranda was

recently cleared to return to full basketball activities last week. Miranda,

the daughter of Lady Warhawks head coach Nicole Miranda and one of the team’s

better long-range shooters, made her 2020 debut last Friday at Peach County.

“This week of practice has been good timing and we are excited to have the team

back at full strength,” said coach Miranda.
