Veterans Lady Warhawks are on to the Elite 8
The Veterans Lady Warhawks advanced to the Georgia High
School Association Elite 8 for a consecutive season. The Lady Warhawks defeated
visiting Rome 67-62 in overtime Thursday night. The victory earns the program a
meeting with Eagle’s Landing (McDonough) Tuesday night. The Lady Eagles
defeated Riverwood 65-50 Thursday.
The overtime victory had Veterans outscore their opponent
14-9. “It was a great basketball game,” said Veterans head coach Nicole
Miranda. “Rome is an excellent team, athletic and disciplined. I am extremely
proud of my girls and how hard we fought and persevered.”
Undefeated on the road this season (12-0), the Lady Warhawks,
26-3 overall, now have a 10-2 record at home this season. Down 15-11 after the
first quarter, Veterans fought back to outscore Rome 15-5 during the second
quarter to take a 26-20 advantage. That advantage would soon fade as the Lady
Wolves clawed their way back in front to lead 40-36 after three quarters.
Having been down a few times during the playoffs, the Lady Warhawks
fell behind by double-figures during their first round victory at Grifin last
week, Veterans has a way of
figuring things out on the fly and did just that by making up the four-point
difference by the end of regulation.
Overtime belonged to the Lady Warhawks and so did a trip back
to the Elite 8 for the seniors and juniors who contributed in ways both big and
small last season.
“We hit big shots and huge free throws in overtime, as well
as getting some key stops on defense,” said Miranda.
Veterans had four players score in double-figures.”We
converted down the stretch,” said Miranda. “All glory to God to be blessed with
the opportunity to play for a trip to the Final Four again.
On playing on the road for a second time this postseason
Miranada said, “We will practice and prepare hard and compete to win. As all the
teams still plaing at this point in the season, Eagle’s Landing is tough.”
Game time is TBD as of Friday morning press deadline.
