Veterans has big region test against defending state champion Bainbridge Friday night
The Veterans Warhawks,
5-1, are coming into Friday’s game against Bainbridge having played some of
their best ball of the season. In particular to their defense, the past two
games -wins over Houston County and Perry- have been the best games of the
season thus far. Veterans has allowed just five points the past two
games.
Those games are done
and up next is arguably one of the two biggest tests of the season (Veterans
host Warner Robins on November 8) in the defending 5A state champion Bainbridge
Bearcats. The Bearcats are also 5-1 this season, their only loss coming last
week in Tifton. Bainbridge only managed six points in the 18-point loss.
“They are the defending
state champs, they are very talented and well coached,” said Veterans head
football coach and athletic director Milan Turner. “Our players have prepared
well and are excited about the challenge.”
Despite the non-region
loss, the Bearcats are coming into Houston County with tons of talent back from
last season’s team, including seniors Jackson Wheeler, Jaheim Jenkins and
Michael Ryan on offense and juniors Monteric Robertson and Caleb Lewis at
cornerback.
As well as the Veterans
has played defensively the past two weeks the Warhawks will have to be equally
as sharp in order to take the top spot in the region, at least for one week.
Bainbridge is scheduled to play Warner Robins (at home) on October 25. A
victory over the Bearcats would go a long way to get Veterans closer to the Region
1-5A title they were a game short of last season.
Kickoff is scheduled
for 7:30 p.m. at Freedom Field. “It will be an awesome atmosphere and a great
challenge for us,” said Turner. “I’m excited to see our kids play.”
