PERRY, Ga. — Two dogs drowned after a vehicle drove into a pond at the fairgrounds on Thursday, according to Perry Police Department.

Maj. Heath Dykes told The Journal that around 9 p.m. on April 13, a Toyota Tacoma was traveling on the fairgrounds, with participants from a dog show that had taken place that day.

The truck drove into a pond on site, fully submerging the vehicle. Two occupants and a dog were able to escape. Tragically, two dogs were trapped in the back seat and drowned during the accident, after unsuccessful attempts to save them were enacted.

Dykes cited stormy weather conditions, vision issues, and the driver being unfamiliar with the venue’s terrain as factors for the accident. Crews were on scene for around two hours recovering the vehicle.
