THREE-PEAT: Westfield wins third consecutive GISA AAA state title
Macon- The rain stayed away and the crosswinds died down in time for the Westfield Lady Hornets to win their third consecutive GISA AAA state championship Saturday night. Sikes Field on the campus of Mercer University must feel like a home away from home for Lady Hornets head coach Danny Camp and his team after having had so much success there of late.
“Amazing, I’m just so happy for these girls,” said Camp following the 12-4 game two victory.
During game one the Lady Hornets, as they have been wont to do this season, got off to a strong start, scoring two runs during the first inning. Sadie Hayes lead-off the game with a double to center and was immediately driven in by Ellie Williams on a triple. Twin sister, and the Lady Hornets starter for game one, Ellie Williams drove in the second run of the inning on a fielder’s choice to first. Emma drove in another courtesy of a third inning solo home run to put Westfield ahead 3-0.
John Milledge and Westfield played two close games during the regular season (both won by the Lady Hornets) and this one was no different. The Lady Trojans scored their first run of the game on a wild pitch in the fifth to cut the Lady Hornets advantage to two runs. The bases were loaded before Williams produced two ground outs and a fly out to end the inning with minimal damage done.
The sixth inning went by with Williams picking up her third strikeout of the game with no runs for scored for the opposition. One of the top pitchers in the county, Williams has displayed the ability to get stronger as games progress. The seventh was similarly as quick as Westfield ended the game with a John Milledge fly-out to Hayes at first base and an expertly played double-play on a line drive to Hayes who tagged the Lady Trojan runner two steps off the bag.
In game two Westfield got freshman pitcher Sydney Langdon off to a solid start with Emma Williams driving in the first run of the game with a single. Hayes had got on with her third hit of the series two at-bats prior. Brooke Corlee’s triple drove in two more runs to put the Lady Hornets up 3-0 before Avery Adams made it 4-0 with an RBI double.
Langdon got herself in a small jam in the first inning when John Milledge picked up a pair of runs on a home run with just one out. It was just third batter she had faced. The following two Lady Trojan hitters grounded out to second base where Emma Williams was waiting for the easy put-outs.
Hayes would continue her hot streak of play driving in another run on a sac fly add that to another Ellie Williams solo home run and the Lady Hornets were ahead 6-2 in the second inning. Emma would follow that with a two-run home run of her own to extend the lead to 8-2. Westfield went on to win the game 12-4 and in the process will be the favorite to do it again next season as they will be graduating just one senior from this year’s team, left fielder Jordan Camp.
Westfield Athletic Director Chip Champion might have to think about scheduling a few regular season games at Sikes Field next year. After all it’s virtually a home field for the Lady Hornets.
