Thomson Middle School looking for speakers to teach life skills to students
CENTERVILLE, Ga. – Thomson Middle School is seeking guest speakers to educate students involved in their programs.
Young Men of Thomson and Top-Notch Lady Tigers are two programs the school offers to students. Young Men of Thomson is a group consisting of boys ranging from sixth to eight grade and Top-Notch Lady Tigers is a group of girls also in the same range.
According to counselors Loreal Jordan and Alicia Ezell, the programs were created for students struggling with their behavior, socioeconomic background and other different issues. Ezell said both her and Jordan saw a need for a group that can help each other and now both programs have been offered for three to four years.
Now, the counselors are asking the community for help and are looking for a community stakeholder who is interested in speaking to the groups. The speaker can be anyone including barbers and businessman. Both counselors said it can be anyone who wants to share any life skills with the students.
“Whether for our young men of Thomson if that’s something that somebody can do about teaching them life skills like tying a tie or how to change a tire or just a rite of passage for men or anyone that is a woman that can come in and teach rite of passage skills for our young ladies. We would love to have them, one for the environment in our community just to know these are our kids and we need to invest in them,” said Jordan.
Ezell said if anyone is interested, the counselors would talk to the principal first and if they come into the building, they must conduct a background check on the volunteer.
Ezell also added she wants students to be introduced to different areas of employment in the community.
“We want to introduce them to all kinds of different entrepreneurship, different things like that, like becoming business owners. Just broaden their horizon as it relates to business and working and doing something outside of what they’re used to. We have a lot of invested teachers here, but it’s kind of nice to expand their village by bringing in those stakeholders as well,” said Ezell.
The counselors added that they plan on taking the kids on a field trip somewhere in the middle Georgia area or to the Aquarium. They said they encourage the stakeholders to donate to help them achieve their field trip.
If anyone is interested in volunteering, email Loreal Jordan at loreal.jordan@hcbe.net or call her at (478) 953-0486 extension 3485.
