Theology Matters Conference
Beginning on Friday, April 21st and continuing through Sunday April 23rd, our church will be hosting a weekend conference. The theme of the meeting is – Theology Matters. While such a conference may seem unimportant and unnecessary to many folks, I think clear-minded Christians and seasoned-saints would concede this community and our nation sorely need a renewed interest in, and commitment to, learning all we can about God. In fact, mature-minded believers would insist – our country needs to turn back to God, seek His face and discover anew who He is and what He rightly demands of us.
Sadly, we live in a time of national history when God, the Bible and Christianity hold less and less value in the minds and lives of everyday Americans. Given the expanding immorality so prevalent in our culture and the ever-increasing disdain for Biblical principles, it would be hard to rightly argue against that statement. America is becoming more and more secular and less spiritual by the week. Many of you who read these articles find yourselves shocked (flabbergasted might be a better word) at some of the craziness that takes place in our country. I hate using that word, craziness, but it is the kindest word I can think of to describe the lunacy we see taking place around us! Some of you are old enough to remember when common sense and sanity governed our culture, but look at it now. Why, most of you could never even have imagined some of the ungodly ugliness that is now the norm in America. But this friends, is what happens when God is removed from a society.
Which is why a conference on God and theology is so vastly important. We need God. We need to learn all we can about God. Webster defines theology as: “the science of God and divine things; or the science which teaches the existence, character and attributes of God, his laws and government, the doctrines we are to believe, and the duties we are to practice.” Simply stated, theology is the study of all-things God. Theology is the study of who God is, what His word teaches and how we can honor Him with our lives. I honestly cannot think of anything more needful in America right now than reacquainting ourselves with our Creator. Friends, theology matters. It matters deeply. Whether you believe this or not, every single person on the planet will stand before God one day to give account. The Christian faith isn’t some fairy-tale, make-believe story created to help simpletons cope with life. Not so. There is a God. And this God can be known, worshipped, and adored.
Think on this, what we believe, directly affects how we behave. When we believe the wrong things, we behave the wrong way. This is exactly why we see our society headed in this wicked and self-destructive direction. The members of Memorial Heights Baptist Church are hosting this conference because we believe, every Christian should be well-grounded in, and rightly value the fundamental doctrines of Scripture. Also that every local church should emphasize and accurately declare the cardinal teachings of the Christian faith. Furthermore, a commitment to doctrinal conviction is necessary for spiritual maturity for the believer and the vitality of the kingdom of God.
Contrary to the relativistic culture in which we live, where words and truths are considered fluid, we maintain – Theology Matters. Folks, doctrine absolutely matters.
Every family and community will be affected, either positively or negatively, by how Bible doctrine is handled. When and where theology is belittled or dismissed as unimportant by believers; doctrinal indifference, Biblical illiteracy and spiritual immaturity is inevitable Even worse can be expected by unbelievers. This is why theology matters.
We invite you to come worship and learn with us. This coming weekend, gifted men will declare the major tenants of the Christian faith.
Below is a schedule for the conference.
Friday at 7:00 PM Pastor Jason Shults will be speaking on, Bibliology – What we believe about the Bible. Why having a proper understanding of Revelation and Inspiration matters.
At 8:00 PM Pastor Tom Horn will address, Trinitarian Theology – What we believe about the Triunity of God. Why a Biblical understanding of who God reveals Himself to be matters.
Saturday at 10.00 AM Pastor George Sledd will teach about, Hamartiology – What we believe about the Doctrine of Sin. Why the way we view the origin and consequences of sin matters.
Saturday at 11:00 AM Pastor Dennis Harden will preach on, Christology – What we believe about the Person and Work of Christ. Why understanding who Jesus is and what He accomplished matters.
The church will then provide lunch for all in attendance.
Saturday afternoon at 2.00 PM Pastor Jamie Powell will teach on, Pneumatology – What we believe about the Holy Spirit. Why a proper understanding of the Person and work of the Holy Spirit matters.
Then Saturday at 3:00 PM Pastor Tom Horn will explain, Ecclesiology – What we believe about the church. Why a right understanding and appreciation of the church matters.
Finally, Sunday at 10.00 AM Pastor Jason Shults will preach on Soteriology – What we believe about salvation. Why our understanding of the doctrine and method of salvation matters.
Then during the morning worship hour Sunday at 11:00 AM Pastor George Sledd will address, Eschatology – What we believe about the end times. Why our understanding of prophecy and the last days matter.
I realize, these differing “-ologies” are some big words, but in truth they are basic studies of God, how to know God and how to be at peace with this Glorious God.
Please make plans to join us.
