The Road to Cartersville, Georgia

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Wednesday evening was the start of the Road to Cartersville for many of the local Houston County area volleyball teams.

The teams included the Perry Panthers traveling to Starr’s Mill in 4A, Veterans Warhawks traveling to face off against Effingham County and Houston County Bears to host South Effingham Mustangs. The Panthers had ran into a roadblock facing and dropped the first three sets of the best of five losing 25-13, 25-2, and 25-6. Veterans fared better in the best of the five sets but still dropped the first three sets 25-14, 26-24, and 25-18. The second and third sets were competitive, but the Warhawks were unable to get things turned around. The Warhawks and Panthers are now eliminated from the playoffs, but both schools had very successful seasons.

Houston County Bears hosted the South Effingham Mustangs and won four out of the five sets with scores of 27-25, 25-22, 23-25 and 25-17. Although the Bears took the “W” in the match they have much to improve before their next opponent. In the first three sets the Bears committed several hitting and passing errors and at many points throughout the sets were down by five or more points. The positive in many of the sets was the play at the service line, which was led by Jesse Gober (#13) who had several service aces and good placement to bring the Bears back in many of the sets.

As Coach Huelsman stated after the game, “It was not a pretty win but will take it to move on.”

Huelsman also gave accolades to Jesse Gober on her strong service play throughout the match. Gober, a junior, not only contributed on the service line but also provided positive plays in her role as defensive specialist. The team was successful blocking the Mustangs this evening and provided some timely digs and kills that helped the Bears come out on top in the narrow sets this evening.

The Houston County Bears will be hosting the Dunwoody Wildcats at the new Bears Den on Saturday, Oct. 22. The comparison of the teams on MaxPreps has the Wildcats leading many of the categories by narrow margins, and it should be a great battle to come out and watch on Saturday. The kills by both teams are relatively even but from the stats Dunwoody is very capable of digging the ball. With both having nearly identical records this should be a great match to watch in the county on Saturday.
