The law of the harvest

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

I have never been much of a gardener. If the truth is known, I am not a gardener at all. For two years in a row I tried planting a garden in what appeared to be a good space near our house but neither year did I make it work. So, when I pick vegetables from the garden, it means that I make a trip to the produce section of a grocery store.

What I have heard from those who actually plant and work in their gardens is that the type of seed you plant is the type of crop you will harvest. It does make sense. If you plant watermelon seeds, you will grow watermelons. If you plant pumpkin seeds, you will grow pumpkins. Cucumbers, squash or corn are all the same. It depends on the seed you plant that determines what you will grow.

God says that the crop that you grow in your life depends on the seeds that you plant in your life. The Bible says it this way, “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows that he will also reap” – Galatians 6:7.

This verse is simply telling us that we do not need to try and fool ourselves because God knows what kind of seed that we are planting in our lives and that those seeds will grow the crops that we will harvest in our lives. This is the law of nature, and according to God’s word, it is how God works in our lives as well.

We will not fool God by claiming to plant one type of seed when we are actually planting another type of seed. He knows that the type of seed that we plant will determine the crop that we will reap.

The next verse explains the type of seeds that we plant and what the harvest for that seed will bring. “For he who sows to his flesh will reap corruption, but he who sows to the spirit will of the spirit reap everlasting life” – Galatians 6:8.

Do we want to harvest corruption in our lives? If we do, we should plant ungodly seeds that are of the flesh. Do we want to harvest everlasting life? If we do, we should plant seeds that are of the spirit and that are pleasing to God. The type of seeds that we plant will determine the crop we will grow.

What type of seeds are we planting? Are we always doing things that are self-serving? If so, we will harvest a crop of corruption. These types of seeds will grow turmoil and destruction in our lives and we will be disappointed with the crop.

Most of us want to do things that are obedient and pleasing to God, and if we do, we will harvest a crop of everlasting life. This does not mean that there will not be some briars in our lives that could make thing difficult at times. However, it does mean that the overall crop in our lives will be good.

Life here on Earth and life to come for Christians will be a true life when we plant seeds that are pleasing to God. We reap what we sow because God promises us that and what God promises will happen.
