The Biggest Lie Ever Told

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

You don’t have to look far to find the greatest lie ever told. You will find it in chapter 2 of Genesis. God created Adam and Eve and placed them in a virtual paradise called the Garden of Eden. They were told “to tend and keep the garden.” God had only one stipulation; He instructed them, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden, but you must not eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, for when you eat from it, you will certainly die.”

Then, the cunning Serpent (Devil) entered the picture. He told Eve, “You will not certainly die. God knows that, when you eat from the tree, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” When Eve saw that the fruit was pleasing to the eye and that she could gain wisdom by consuming it, she ate it and gave some to her husband, who also ate it. Thereby, Adam and Eve lost eternal life and began hiding among the trees so God couldn’t find them. When God did encounter them, He issued the death sentence, saying, “You will return to the ground from where you were taken. For dust you are and to dust you shall return.”

The Devil is still lying. He puts in a person’s mind the thought that one drink of liquor won’t hurt them. In fact, it would be relaxing and make them feel better. The person falls for the Devil’s entreaty and becomes hooked for the rest of their life. They live a miserable and unhealthy life, going from one drink to the next until they die from cirrhosis or organ failure.

A young person who smokes that first cigarette is told by the Devil that one cigarette won’t hurt. He entices the unsuspecting victim to experience the tension relief that nicotine brings. Forty years later, the person dies of throat or lung cancer. The CDC asserts that either smoking or drinking reduces lifespan by at least 12 years.

The same is true of the person who takes that first opioid. He can’t wait until he can get another magic pill. In later years, this person will lie or steal to get the money for another fix. Many people with an addiction either wind up in prison for drug trafficking or die from respiratory failure.

Then there is the young lady whose boyfriend begs to have sex with him — that no harm will come from having sex with him and that he won’t tell anyone, which is the first thing he does to besmirch her reputation. Or, the two married people who secretly slip around in an illicit affair, being convinced they will never be caught.

Please pass this along to someone who hasn’t yet fallen to the Devil’s lies.

I was born 9 October 1935 at 800 Ball Street in Perry, Georgia.  During those days,  Perry had a basketball dynasty, winning 83 percent of its games with nine state championships, often playing higher classification schools. My senior year, I was selected as Captain of the All-State team, scoring 28 points in the final game against Clarkston High School (a tremendously tall and talented team).

I married the love of my life in 1955.  She was Beverly Davis.  We were married for 66 years.  Because of advancing age (nearly 90), I had to sell my home and property in Peach County.  I now live with my son, Tim, in Dahlonega, Georgia.  I have another son, Bill, who lives near Canton, Georgia. I miss Beverly very much. I have shed so many tears about the loss of Beverly, I don’t have any left.

I am honored to be writing for my hometown paper, the Houston Home Journal. The Managing Editor, Brieanna Smith, is doing a truly outstanding job! She deserves our highest order of commendation.
