That one little thing called a tongue

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The ability to speak is a wonderful gift that God has given us, and for those who can develop it to a high degree of proficiency, it can bring all sorts of rewards. If I were to ask you to state, in one word, the most powerful part of the human body as it relates to speaking and communication what would your answer be? If you said the little six-letter word called a tongue, you would be correct. The reason that I believe this is true is because I have seen the tongue lift the spirits of and motivate a 260 pound man to action, and I have seen another tongue slash a person to shreds. Yes, the tongue is like a two-edged sword, one side is good and the other side is bad. It is how we choose to use it that makes the difference. It is only when we learn to control our tongue and use it for good that we can rightfully expect good things to happen in our lives. In my own experiences, I have found that many people have Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde personalities in respect to their tongues. When they are in public or “on stage” so to speak, they use their tongues one way, but when they are “off stage,” you would never know they were the same people. The Bible says in Matthew 15 verse 18, “But those things that proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart and they defile the man.” So there you have it. It is really the heart of a man or woman that determines what comes out of his or her mouth. The tongue, on the other hand, is just a protrusile, a freely moving organ that in human beings serves as an organ of taste and speech. I believe that if you will give this some serious thought, you will see that it is smart for intelligent people, and even those who are gifted with unusual skills, to learn how to control and use their tongues wisely. If you have a problem controlling your tongue and you want to do something about it, a good place to begin is to examine your heart. When we get our hearts right with others, it will be much easier to control our tongues. I have always admired soft spoken and gentle people who speak the truth and are always positive when talking about others. They seem to have an inner strength that says that it is not necessary to tear others down in order to build themselves up. This world would be a much better place if everyone would strive to learn to control their tongues properly, and we know that it all must begin with you and me. Finally, one reason why a dog is such a lovable creature is that his tail wags instead of his tongue.
