Stupid Spending?
Columnist Kelly Burke shares his opinion on Jeff Bezo’s wedding and the its criticism in this week’s column.

The World: Why does one of the world’s richest men spend $50 million on his wedding?
Me: What do I care? Jeff Bezos owns a yacht that blows everything else away.
His house would make Liberace blush. Yet, he spends $50 million on a wedding and some object.
HHJ Reader: Kelly, spending that much is a bad look in these troubling times!
Me: I’m not sure what the troubling times are all about, but good times or bad times, doesn’t Bezos’s spending this dough put $50 million into the world economy? Isn’t that a good thing?
Charlize Theron and Rosie O’Donnell complained that the wedding expenditure was gross, but since they weren’t invited, maybe their protests were more about being shunned.
Some complained that it was the wrong message in this time of climate instability. The real threat to our climate is when Rosie … I’ll leave it at that.
Some complained that Bezos was wearing the wrong jacket for his tux. Really? You’re going to tell the fourth-richest guy in the world his tux doesn’t match?
Not me. And some said his gift bags were cheap. He probably got a lightning deal on Amazon, so the bags may have looked cheap, but he got a great deal on them.
As you can tell, I don’t care what absurdly rich people spend their money on. If you live in a straw hut, everyone looks absurdly rich compared to you.
Personal spending is actually that, personal.
So have at it Mr. & Mrs. Bezos. Spend, spend, spend. I congratulate you on your wedding. I hope it is a blessed marriage.
