Friday afternoon, a fire was reported at a residence at 244 W Highway 26, in Elko. Fire Chief Chris Stoner informed that the call came in at 1:10 p.m., and that residents of the home had left, and when they returned home, they discovered a fire had ignited to the backside of the structure, and also to a vehicle parked near the back of the house. Stoner noted that it is unclear which caught fire first, the vehicle or the house.

“If the vehicle did not start the fire, then the radiant heat from the house caught the vehicle, or vice versa,” Stoner explained.

Stoner said that when crew arrived on scene, the flames were

through the top of the house, and that it took between 60 and 90 minutes to contain the blaze. Stoner also mentioned, due to a water main break during the incident, the Peach County Fire Department was called to assist, bringing two tanker trucks to help supply water.

Stoner shared that he believes the home to be a total loss, with the fire damaging the roof, as well as some of the bedrooms. The vehicle sustained a good amount of damage to its front end as well. Stoner said that there were no injuries during the incident.
