Spring ball in the works for Perry Junior League

PERRY, Ga. — With spring evaluations coming up this weekend, 828 kids signed up to play and Opening Day fast approaching on March 4, Perry Junior League is looking to knock the upcoming season out of the park — but they could use your help in making it a success for the kids.

The league is looking for anyone interested in roles such as coaches, umpires and even sponsorships. The Journal spoke with PJL President Christy Bridges for more.

PJL is currently in need of volunteer coaching staff for its five-year-old boys group of players. Bridges said the schedule is manageable for the right person.

“Teams usually practice one to two times per week before the season,” Bridges said. “Games are generally one a week.”

In terms of becoming an umpire, the position would be paid according to what age group one serves, and those interested would receive training from the league’s head umpire. If you have no experience but a will to learn, come check it out, Bridges said.

“Experience is preferred, but we will have a training session,” Bridges said. “Anyone age 15 and above is welcome.”

If one wishes to support the league financially, there are a few different options available, including sign, team and corporate sponsorships, Bridges said.

“Sponsorships play a huge part in what we do because we do not receive any money from the city, county or state,” Bridges explained. “We would not be able to offer baseball and softball programs without the help of our community sponsorships.

” … We truly appreciate our sponsors. Like I said, we couldn’t do this without the community’s support. The members of the board are volunteers who work tirelessly to make PJL a great place to play ball, and I am incredibly thankful for their hard work.”

The sponsor form can be found on the league’s website: perryjuniorleague.com.

Bridges said that with a whopping 828 kids signed up to play, this makes for the largest group she has seen since becoming league president. Although regular registration is closed and many age groups are full, the league will be offering late registration for a $30 fee through this coming Friday, Jan. 20, at noon.

As for spring evaluations coming up this weekend, Bridges added there could be some questionable weather — but the league planned ahead. Even if one can’t make it that day and are registered to play, there are plans in place.
