Spotify Wrapped is here!
Spotify rolled out its Wrapped for the year, and, like always, I couldn’t wait to see it.
Spotify rolled out its Wrapped for the year, and, like always, I couldn’t wait to see it. It’s a fun little snapshot of my listening habits, and there are always a few surprises hiding in the slides. The stats don’t lie; I think they paint a clear picture of my personality.
I racked up 43,766 minutes of music this year, most of it during my work commute. My top genre was Electronic Dance Music (EDM), with plenty of pop, indie, rock and rap mixed in.
My love for electronic music speaks to being energetic, driven and self-motivated. “Go,” by the Chemical Brothers, with its lyric “No time to rest, just do your best,” might as well be my personal motto.
I don’t wait for energy, I manufacture it. And I use it daily for my leadership role, for balancing work and family, and for pushing my creativity in both my job and my art. EDM is emotional caffeine.
As far as top songs go, “Genius” by Sia, Diplo and Labrinth claimed the No. 2 spot. Last year’s top song, “Midnight City” by M83, landed at No. 3, followed by “Take Me Away” by FM Attack at No. 4 and “Go” at No. 5.
My “listening age” landed close to my real age. I’m 31, and Spotify said 32, thanks to all the late-2000s music I revisit. (Fair enough, considering my favorite song dropped in 2009.)
My listening age and the grip that “Midnight City” and “Take Me Away” has on me show how nostalgic I am. Those tracks take me right back to euphoric night drives from years ago. I still play them on the way home when I want to relive that sense of wonder.
“Midnight City” is my all-time favorite, so I’m not shocked it stuck with me. I even rang in the new year listening to it with my husband and nephew while watching the fireworks in Perry, a memory I’ll never forget.
Now for the mildly embarrassing reveal: my top song was “two” by bbno$, a total guilty pleasure I’d never listen to around another soul. It’s strictly a pre-work pump-up track.
More embarrasment: My top album was “The Life of a Showgirl” by Taylor Swift. I was convinced the Kpop Demon Hunters soundtrack would take first place. Both were definitely comfort albums this year.
My top artists were mostly repeats:
• Tokyo Machine again at No. 1 (No surprise. I’ve been obsessed with his new EP)
• bbno$ at No. 2 (thanks to “two”)
• Big Gigantic, Taylor Swift and Glass Animals rounding out the top five.
What’s kind of funny is that, aside from a couple outliers (looking at you, bbno$ and Taylor Swift), my top songs aren’t even that popular. They’re just deeply, specifically me.
Honestly, the mix of guilty-pleasure hype tracks, neon-bright EDM and emotional throwbacks sums me up pretty well: quirky, open-hearted and always a little bit in my own dreamlike universe.
If anything, this year’s Wrapped reminded me that the songs we gravitate toward can say more about us than we realize. If you got a Wrapped this year, take a closer look.
You might be surprised by what it reveals about your personality, your memories and the soundtrack you’ve been unknowingly writing all year long.
