Spotify Wrapped is almost here, and here are all my predictions
My impatience has gotten the best of me and I asked a third party to show me my listening history. With that in mind, I have a few predictions…
I’m (impatiently) waiting for Spotify Wrapped to drop. When I say this is one of my favorite times of the holiday season, I’m not exaggerating. I spend a lot of time enjoying music, making playlists, and exploring new sounds, and I eagerly want to know what I’ve been obsessed with this year.
Spotify is supposed to release it late November/early December, so it’s coming any time now. The streaming platform has been hush-hush about exactly when, but when it does come, it’ll be a storm of screenshots on social media sharing what everybody has been into. (Including mine; this is when I emerge from under the social media rock I stay under, then back to me lurking and mindless scrolling.)
My impatience has gotten the best of me and I asked a third party to show me my listening history. With that in mind, I have a few predictions…
Am I becoming a Swiftie?
Taylor Swift popped up a lot in my listening history. She was high up last year, but I think she may take over as my top artist. “THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT” came out in April, so I think that may have something to do with it.
With that said, quite a few pop stars made big moves in music and shot up in popularity this year, (Sabrina Carpenter, Charli xcx and Chappell Roan come to mind.) I am predicting one of them in my top five. Probably Chappell Roan, I can’t get enough of her song “HOT TO GO.”
If Taylor Swift or Chappell Roan doesn’t make it to the top spot, it will probably go again to last year’s top artist: Tokyo Machine. He has released several new tracks this year that I became obsessed with, and I keep going back to old favorites.
Called out upon the waters
Another huge development has been my spiritual journey. As I grow closer to God, I’m finding myself more and more attracted to Christian music. It’s a slow process; I still listen to secular music (see the aforementioned Swift and Roan fandom,) but I’m finding that I can’t stomach overly vulgar music, leading to a sharp drop for some of the artists and songs that I used to love.
Music for me has always been a form of escapism, and Christian music helps me find hope and joy when times get tough. This year, I was obsessed with “Oceans” by Hillsong UNITED, and Christian artists like Coquí, For KING & COUNTRY, The Devil Wears Prada, and Kirk Franklin. I’d be surprised if any of these artists don’t make it in my top songs.
Getting roasted for my music taste
I think my overall Wrapped is going to be quite different from last year, according to an AI tool that “roasted” my Spotify listening.
“Your Spotify was shaggy-bowl-cuts-glowstick-nobody-puts-baby-in-a-corner bad. Thank your obsession with The Beatles, edm (e.g., Flume and ODESZA), and (I’ve Had) The Time of My Life – From “Dirty Dancing” Soundtrack for that,” it said.
“You are 37% basic. Most of your music comes straight from iHeartRadio. lol Kendrick Lamar,” it also said. I think it’s reading too much into my Taylor Swift listening.
“You’re too trendy for your own good. You know there’s good music from before 2019, right?” It finally said. I like to stay up to date. Don’t hate me for wanting to switch it up.
So now, I wait and see. With the emergence of new favorites and a deeper connection to my faith, I anticipate a Wrapped that might surprise me. Even if I get “roasted” along the way, it just adds to the fun of sharing my music journey with friends. Once Spotify Wrapped finally reveals itself, I’ll be ready to share my experience and the songs that defined my year. Stay tuned!
