Someone’s 0 must go
The Veterans Warhawks (4-0) play undefeated Oconee County (4-0) this week. The Warhawks beat Perry last Friday 24-14 where quarterback, Blake Ethridge, threw for 331 yards and two touchdowns. The senior quarterback is at the head of a steady and efficient offense, averaging 242 passing yards per game with a .641 completion percentage. Senior running back, Lebron Fields, is the hard-running workhorse, averaging 105 rushing yards per game on six yards per carry.
Ethridge, Fields, and receiver, Justin McCarty, the usual suspects, powered Veterans in the win against Perry. Fields racked up 160 yards of total offense, and McCarty finished with four catches for 98 yards and a touchdown. Kicker, Daniel Gibbs, also knocked in a 48-yard field goal and hasn’t missed a PAT yet this season.
Veterans have made their presence known with convincing wins through the first four weeks and sit at No.5 in Class 5A on the Georgia High School Football Daily rankings. A repeat performance against Oconee County will add a quality opponent to their hit list. Oconee ranks No.3 in Class 3A on GHSF Daily, and like Veterans, Oconee has a versatile offense and strong defense.
But Oconee hasn’t faced a team of Veterans’ stature, and the talent of Oconee just makes a team like Veterans rise to the occasion. The team has made it known about a chip they carry on their shoulder, and for Oconee’s sake, hopefully the polls don’t have Veterans losing, or we could see another repeat of the Jones County game.
This will be Veterans’ first true road game on the season. Their one “away” game thus far was against Northside, so this will be their first trip outside of Houston County. Veterans will make the two-hour trip to Watkinsville, Ga. on Friday, Oct. 9 and the game kicks off at 7:30 p.m.
