Senator Larry Walker III kicks off campaign with drive-thru event
Incumbent Georgia State Senator Larry Walker III, who represents senate district 20, embarked on a type of drive-thru campaign event Saturday, offering yard signs, T-shirts and refreshments. Walker shared that his day started with an event in Dublin, then in Warner Robins and culminated in Perry.
“Under normal circumstances, we would be doing neighborhood canvasing, knocking on doors and meeting the voters…” Walker explained, noting that the COVID-19 pandemic inspired them to try a drive-thru sign pickup event so that constituents could come and get a sign, speak with Walker and bring him their concerns, and ask for the support of constituents.
Walker expressed that he has not been able to have any large events this year, though they have been able to hold a few smaller events, where people were socially distanced and wore masks, admitting that it is hard to have the campaign rallies that he would normally have. Walker said that the district he represents is large, spanning four counties—Houston, Pulaski, Laurens and Bleckley.
“We’re having to use more social media, direct mail and be creative in what we’re trying to do,” Walker divulged.
Walker faces Julius Johnson (D) in the November General Election for the representation of District 20.
Walker said that he was first elected to the Georgia State Senate in 2015 after Sen. Ross Tolleson resigned due to health reasons, and since then he has served for almost five years, experiencing five sessions and two special sessions. Walker cited that he served on some key committees and has a leadership role in the republican caucus. Walker expressed that he feels that he has been able to make a difference in the middle Georgia area.
Walker listed that one accomplishment of which he was proud was his involvement in the passing of a bill relative to regulations on small businesses which included the elimination of corporate net worth tax on small businesses with a net worth of $100,000 or less.
“I am all about trying to get our economy growing again, supporting small businesses and economic development in our area,” Walker proclaimed.
Walker also shared that health care is also an important area of concern of his, speaking of his support for a bill passed this past session, which would allow for the expanding of the scope of practice for advanced nurses, to fully utilize their training, and order radiological exams without the prescribing of a physician.
Walker shared that he wants to be able to continue to serve his district.
“I feel like I am in a position to effectively represent middle Georgia and my district. I hope they will see fit to send me back after next year,” Walker later stated.
