Schools in Code Yellow due to incident at nearby apartment complex
Two schools are in Code Yellow due to an individual trying to break into apartments with a firearm at a nearby apartment complex.
UPDATE: Warner Robins Police Department arrested Michael Erwin, 28, who was attempting to break into the apartment of Gkhiya Releford, 22, and Jamaria Thomas, 23.
According to an updated release, before law enforcement arrived, Erwin went back to his apartment in the same complex.
“Attempts were made to contact Erwin, but had negative response. Due to this, members of the Warner Robins P.D. SWAT team along with members of the Houston County Sheriff Department’s Warrant Unit responded,” the release said. “Both agencies were able to safely place Erwin into custody without incident.”
Erwin was charged with home invasion, first degree burglary and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
UPDATE: As of 10:50 a.m. both Lake Joy Primary and Lake Joy Elementary are back to Code Green.
“Good morning, parents! We have now returned to a Code Green, which means we are now in normal school operations. Thank you for your cooperation and support earlier this morning. We look forward to a great day at [Lake Joy Elementary and Lake Joy Primary],” the Houston County School District said.
WARNER ROBINS — Warner Robins Police Department responded to a call around 7:20 a.m. Friday morning for an individual armed with a gun trying to break into apartments located at 6080 Lakeview Road.
According to a media release, WRPD officers learned the suspect was a resident of the apartment complex and have currently set a perimeter around his apartment. There were no shots fired and no one was injured when the incident first occurred.
“This is an active/on-going incident where officers are attempting to make contact with the suspect at the apartment. Please avoid the area until the situation is resolved,” the release said.
As a result of this incident, Lake Joy Elementary and Lake Joy Primary have been placed in a Code Yellow. Feagin Mill Middle briefly went into Code Yellow but is back to normal operations.
The Houston County School District released an updated callout to parents of the schools still in Code Yellow.
“Good morning, parents. I wanted to give you an update. [Lake Joy Elementary and Lake Joy Primary] is still on a Code Yellow because of an incident in the surrounding neighborhood, but there is not a safety concern inside our building. We are allowing parents and buses to drop off students. Until law enforcement returns our school to a Code Green, all students will remain inside and our classroom doors and exterior doors will be locked. We will have controlled movement within the building until we go back to Code Green. We will let you know once we return to normal operations. As always, safety is our number one priority. Thank you!”
Anyone with more information regarding the incident is urged to contact Det. Chan Pierce at 478-302-5380 or the Macon Regional Crimestoppers.
