President Trump: A champion for women’s economic empowerment
Just under four years ago, I remember watching with pride as President Trump was elected, shattering the expectations of news outlets and pollsters nationwide. I remember the response from the left and their cries about how terrible his presidency would be for all involved, especially women. However, I wasn’t worried, because as a Republican leader and a woman, I knew that President Trump’s love for and commitment to our country and all its citizens was rock solid. Looking back, I’m proud to say that I was correct in my prediction. Since his inauguration in 2017, President Trump has fought tirelessly and has served as a champion for women’s economic prosperity, both at home and abroad.
President Trump hit the ground running in his commitment to turn the struggling American economy around. During his first year in office, the number of American women living in poverty fell by nearly 600,000. In fact, since his election, women have experienced near-record low unemployment. Of course, the economy stalled as our country waded through the unprecedented global pandemic that is coronavirus, but thankfully, things have started to turn around. As a result, in May, women’s unemployment dropped from 16.2% to 14.5% nationwide.
These numbers aren’t just the result of luck; they are part of President Trump’s plan to enact targeted, specific measures to empower women to reach the heights of their economic potential. One example of this is President Trump’s commitment to technology education for our nation’s women. He directed a whopping sum of over $200 million per year to this goal and has championed programs that encourage female participation in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers.
President Trump is not alone in his aim to help all women become more prosperous. Another enthusiastic advocate for women’s economic advancement is Senior Advisor Ivanka Trump. In February 2019, she created the Women’s Global Development and Prosperity Initiative (W-GDP) whose ultimate goal is to assist 50 million women across 22 developing countries to recognize their economic potential by 2025. Wildly successful in its first year in action, the initiative reached 12 million women across the globe. Additionally, as part of the W-GDP, nearly two million women participated in workforce training and career development programs sponsored by the United States government. Additionally, the United States extended government-backed loans to over 9,000 women-owned businesses.
For women who seek to advance their careers and maintain a family, President Trump has delivered two-fold. Thanks to President Trump’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, the child tax credit was doubled to $2,000 per child. The Trump Administration also oversaw the largest expansion of the Child Care and Development Block Grants (CCDBG), allowing states to provide child care subsidies to low-income families. Women across the country are now able to further their careers without the often overwhelming concern of how to care for their children while they are at work.
Looking back at all of President Trump’s accomplishments on behalf of women since his inauguration in 2017, I am filled with pride, and I am grateful for President Trump’s leadership and work in this area. Truly, every country deserves a leader who encourages women to embrace their career potential, and I know I look forward to re-electing ours this November.
