Roland Fall: The Perry Framer’s Market Grand Opening will be May 4, 2013. We’ll
open at our usual time at 8:00 a.m. and begin the 2013 Season! Here are some of the fresh food products you will find at
The Perry Farmer’s Market on Saturday, May 4: vegetables of all kinds,
delicious cakes, baked goods, bread, mini pies, “in season” fruit,
canned jams, jellies, and chow-chows, locally grown peaches, Georgia apples,
peaches, water melons, organically grown vegetables, pork products, lemonade,
strawberry lemonade, shucked and shelled vegetables on ice, beautiful house
plants, herbs, boiled peanuts, salsa, ready to eat snacks, and more! The added plus will be Roland and
his group on The Bandstand.
May is not that far away … please put
this date on your calendar and I’ll see you there… Agnes
Recipe Request: As a child, when I visited my
grandmother on the farm, she cooked something that my Pops called Biscuit
Hoecake and she also cooked cornbread that looked like a cake layer. Sometimes
she would bake a different cornbread cake that we had with hot butter and honey
or syrup. It was so good. I have not been successful in re-creating these
delicious dishes. Can you help? KB
The first thing that I would say is: “You need a cast iron skillet that is well seasoned.”
The Biscuit Hoecake is very simple: Just make a small batch of biscuit dough
and pour the dough into a well-oiled skillet. Spread out with the back of the
spoon and bake in a 375 degree preheated oven until it is done. Turn out and
cut in wedges and serve while hot. Can be buttered and reheated.
Biscuit Dough
2
cups self-rising flour
¾
cup buttermilk
1/3
cup vegetable oil
Mix
together and prepare as above.
Southern Biscuits (This is my favorite
biscuit recipe…the sour cream is the shortening.aaf)
2
cups flour (plain)
1
teaspoon soda
½
teaspoon salt
1
and ¼ cups sour cream
Sift
together flour, salt, and soda. Whip the sour cream until it is heavy foam and
add the flour mixture. This makes a soft dough. Gently flour and bring dough
together (do not handle too much). Shape into a circle on a greased baking
sheet or roll out and cut with a biscuit cutter. Bake immediately in a
preheated 450 degree oven until done.
When
making cornbread, always heat the skillet and the shortening in the oven. I
usually leave about 1-2 tablespoons of shortening in the skillet and get it
sizzling hot on top of the stove before adding the batter. This gives a
beautiful crust to the cornbread.
Skillet Cornbread
2
cups self-rising corn meal
2
eggs
1
and ¾ cup buttermilk
½
cup vegetable oil
Heat
oil in skillet. Beat eggs and milk together and beat in the corn meal. Beat in
the oil and set the skillet on the stove to heat. Pour batter into the hot
skillet and bake in a preheated 425 degree oven until brown. Serve hot.
Egg Bread (This is probably what
your Grandma served with hot butter and honey or syrup.aaf)
Whisk
together the following:
2
cups self-rising corn meal
3
eggs
1
and ½ cups sweet milk
Measure
½ cup oil into skillet and heat. Pour most of it into batter and mix. Heat
skillet and pour in batter. Bake in a preheated 400 degree oven for 20 minutes
or until done.

for Laughter: TELL ME THIS WON’T
HAPPEN TO ME!!!
An elderly Lady called 999 on her mobile phone to
report that her car has been broken into. She is
hysterical as she explains her situation to the operator: “They’ve stolen
the stereo, the steering wheel, the brake pedal and even the accelerator!”
she cried. The operator said, “Stay calm an officer is on the way.”
A few minutes later, the Officer
radios in. “Disregard.” He says, “She got in the back-seat by
mistake.”
OLD
FRIENDS
Two elderly ladies had been friends for many decades.
Over the years, they had shared all kinds of activities and adventures. Lately,
their activities had been limited to meeting a few times a week to play cards.
One day, they were playing cards when one looked at the other and said,
“Now don’t get mad at me. I know we’ve been friends for a long time but I
just can’t think of your name. I’ve thought and thought, but I can’t remember
it. Please tell me what your name is.” Her friend glared at her. For at
least three minutes she just stared and glared at her.
Finally she said, “How soon do you need to
know?”
