Perry shooting leaves man dead, another hospitalized
According to an updated press release from the Perry Police Department, one man is dead and another is in stable condition following a shooting Thursday afternoon outside Perry’s public safety building on Washington Street. The men involved in the shooting that resulted in one’s death are said to be father and son.
It was just after 3 p.m. that 73-year-old William Edes of the Elko community drove up to the building’s fire department bay asking for help with his son’s mental health issue.
What happened to spark a struggle between the two has not yet been divulged. However, William Edes and his 44-year-old son, Miles Edes, began struggling over a gun while fire personnel, who had seen the actions of the two, went for help. During the struggle, the father was shot in the upper torso before the son turned the gun on himself.
Both men were transported to two separate hospitals for immediate medical attention. The father is deemed to be in stable condition at Navicent Health in Macon, but the son later died at Perry Hospital.
Regarding situations like these, Police Captain Heath Dykes told Houston Home Journal that the Perry Police Department holds the resources and qualified professionals on-call to handle events centered around mental health issues.
“Each individual case is different and how you handle it,” Dykes said.
Dykes mentioned his department would be visiting with Edes once he was in a proper condition to share his side of the story.
More details surrounding this unfortunate tragedy may be released following updated information.
