Perry Police Department investigates stabbing at local apartment complex
PERRY, Ga. — Perry Police Department is currently investigating an incident that took place at an apartment complex on Saturday night: a stabbing, that claimed the life of a local resident.
According to a release by the department, at around 8 p.m. June 10, officers, Perry Fire Department and Houston Medical EMS were dispatched to the Berkshire Court Apartments at 1820 Macon Road in response to a reported stabbing.
There, first responders located a stabbing victim outside the D-building at the apartment complex. Life-saving measures were attempted on scene by police and fire departments, then the victim, identified as Terry Parker, 29, of Americus was transported to Houston Healthcare – Perry via EMS.
Parker ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at Perry Hospital.
The suspect, identified as Angelique Deverouix, 45, of Perry, was on scene and taken into custody within minutes of officers’ arrival. He was charged with Murder, Aggravated Assault and Possession of a Weapon During the Commission of a Crime and is currently held at Houston County Detention Facility. According to Police Chief Alan Everidge, the weapon involved was a machete.
Everidge also explained the victim and suspect were neighbors, likely knew of each other and the incident escalated quickly.
“We’re not exactly 100% sure what would cause the offender to react in such a violent way,” Everidge said. “We have not found any evidence to indicate this was a long term feud or situation that day, or even previously, but something obviously happened that night.”
Everidge also reminded the community that investigators are still on the case to determine a narrative, a motive and to bring justice to the victim.
“We will continue to [determine] if there is a motive behind this to ensure we have the best case possible, to ensure that justice is given out,” Everidge said.
If the public is involved in a dispute, Everidge advised to attempt to find distance and notify first responders immediately.
“Create space and just call 911 and law enforcement will respond. Our job is to try and keep the community safe and de-escalate situations to the best of our ability, and if there is any kind of crime that has occurred, we will take appropriate action from that,” Everidge said.
As of press time Tuesday, the incident remains under investigation. The police department encourages anyone with more information to contact Detective Gilliam at (478) 988-2825.
