Perry Police Department and other agencies make organized crime arrests

PERRY—The Perry Police Department, along with local, county, state and national agencies, made several arrests involving fraud, identity theft, federal and state income tax fraud and human trafficking.
According to a release, arrest warrants were served during the investigation in Houston, Bibb, Crawford, Fulton and DeKalb counties.
Investigators discovered up to $1 million in stolen checks and money orders. These items were likely taken from the U.S. Postal Service blue boxes in Bibb and Houston counties.
Authorities discovered two locations where fraudulent driver’s licenses from all 50 states, passport cards, VA benefit cards, Social Security cards, Alien Resident cards, and debit cards were being manufactured using stolen information from identity theft victims. In addition, a woman trafficking victim from Iowa was rescued in Fulton County.
“It feels good being able to take the time to focus on financial crimes,” Perry PD Det. Kim Morton said. “We don’t have a lot of opportunities to invest this much time into financial crimes, so that was good as it was affecting everybody.”
These crimes mostly affected older people and businesses, two groups that frequently use checks.
According to Morton, these types of crimes have been more common.
“Unfortunately, they are getting more common and are more common pretty much everywhere,” she said. “The banks were extremely helpful in providing the information that we needed to get started.”
Several individuals were arrested and booked in the Houston County Detention Facility:
Jonathan Baez, 34, of Fulton County, originally from New York – charged with human trafficking, pimping, and Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. Baez had outstanding warrants in New York for parole violation, attempted murder and assault with a firearm.

Chashon Hayes, 21, of Warner Robins – charged under the RICO Act.
