Perry man arrested after fleeing scene of rollover accident
HOUSTON COUNTY, Ga. — A rollover crash led to the arrest of the driver involved, according to the Perry Police Department.
At around 9 a.m. on Tuesday, emergency personnel were dispatched to Sandefur Road. When crews arrived, they found a silver sedan upside down in a grassy field next to the road.
Witnesses reported that after the car flipped, a man wearing black and yellow exited the vehicle. He was spotted holding a long rifle and a backpack as he fled into a wooded area.
Once Perry PD arrived, they immediately began searching the area for the suspect. After setting up a perimeter, Georgia State Patrol (GSP) entered on scene with a helicopter to assist in the search. The Houston County Sheriff’s Office also showed up to aid in their pursuit of the suspect.
The Department of Corrections (DOC) also helped in the search, bringing in the K-9 unit. The K-9 unit found the suspect’s backpack on scene, finding marijuana in the bag. The police department also found an AR-15 rifle in a drainpipe nearby.
The suspect returned to the scene of the accident and was taken into custody. He was identified as 19-year-old Jarkevion Sanchez Raines of Perry.
Raines was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of a firearm in commission of a crime, reckless conduct, leaving the scene of an accident and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The entire incident had a quick turnaround time. Captain Heath Dykes with Perry PD reflected on the collaborative nature of the case and how they were able to bring the suspect’s arrest to fruition.
“They did a good job,” Dykes said. “With the assistance of the DOC, bloodhounds, the GSP helicopter, Houston County Sheriff’s [Office,] and our Perry units that were on scene, in quick time, was able to go in and apprehend him and seize the evidence before it got into the wrong peoples’ hands.”
