Perry Kiwanis Club holds tourney, raises funds for local students’
PERRY, Ga. — A fleet of 30 golf carts massed together at Houston Lake Country Club Monday afternoon, as Perry Kiwanis Club President Trent Dowd opened the non-profit’s Third Annual Kiwanis Classic Golf Tournament. A four-man scramble, the tournament acted as a fundraiser that will allow the non-profit to provide scholarships to high school seniors at Perry High School and Westfield.
“We’re just trying to raise a little money to help fund our scholarship,” Dowd said. “The scholarships are for local students who are graduates of Perry High or Westfield School; the graduates of those can apply for it, the seniors of those schools can apply for it, and those scholarships are given to those students as they attend higher education at college.
“They can continue to receive those payments every semester as long as they keep up their GPA and send in grades every semester.”
During last year’s Kiwanis Classic, the non-profit was able to raise $12,000 to put towards local students’ higher education. They hope to raise the same — if not more — this year.
“Kiwanis Club’s mission is to help the children of the community, Dowd said. “We’ve got a lot of children in this community, and we try to do as much as we can for them.
“We’ve got many things we do, and the scholarships is one of the biggest things we do.”
According to Dowd, Perry’s Kiwanis Club does the work they do because the children of Perry’s community are the future.
Right now, four students are receiving Kiwanis Club’s scholarship.
Sponsors for the event included the Star Hospitality Group, SunMark Community Bank, Trattoria Di Napoli Italian Restaurant, Planters First Bank and Moore Insurance Agency.
