The city of Perry honored local veterans Tuesday with the annual program at the Perry Arts Center.

The program was first started in 1992 with the coordination of two local military veterans Don Norris and Tommy Wood.Though this will be Norris’s last year helping out with the program.

Norris is a WWII veteran and was a Private in the Army. Emcee Chief Master Sgt. Lelan Callan announced on Norris’s behalf and thanked him for his service.

“The city of Perry and the Arts Center thank you for your service to our country and for putting on a great program for 22 years,” said Callan.

Perry High School’s Jr ROTC presented the colors while guest singer Samantha Bartlett sang the national anthem. Prayers were lead by Rev. Roland Fall and Perry City Councilman Rev. Willie King. Guest singer Jimmy Gray sang God Bless The USA and Lake Joy Elementary Chorus performed patriotic songs as well.

Mayor Jimmy Faircloth was this year’s guest speaker. He reminded the audience that they have the freedom to choose what they want to do.

“At some point recently we made a choice to attend this event,” he said. “We woke up, some ate breakfast, some exercised, some slept late and barely got here on time. Some went to work and then came here for this event.

“But what no one did was ask a governing authority for permission to do any of that,” said Faircloth.” He then recited a poem and ended by thanking all the veterans for their service.
