Perry High’s Feeney at national contest

Perry High student Janea Feeney traveled to Washington, D.C. to represent Georgia in the National Poetry Out Loud contest. Janea won first place in the state competition held in March at the Atlanta History Center, beating 11 other contestants from across the state. She won $200 and an all-expenses-paid trip with an adult chaperone to Washington D.C. to compete for the national championship, and Perry High received a $500 stipend for to purchase poetry books.

More than 350,000 students from across the nation participated in this year’s competition. Janea placed as a semi-finalist in the national competition – higher than any contestant from Georgia has ever placed.

Angela Heath, Perry High’s poetry contest coordinator, said, “She won our region and participated in the state contest for an unprecedented and unmatched four years in a row.”

In Washington D.C., Janea was one of 53 high school students vying for the Poetry Out Loud title of National Champion.
