PERRY, Ga. – The Perry Panthers’ Friday night was a success not just on the football field, but also in honoring long time athletic trainer, Mike Pike.

Pike served as Perry’s trainer for many years as well as being a Perry High School Alumni.

Pike passed earlier this year. He always put the athletes first and often worked with student trainers. Houston Health Care and Perry High School honored Pike’s family with a plaque to show tribute to such a great man.

Perry (1-1) also showed tribute to Pike on the field during their game against the Jones County Greyhounds (1-2)

Perry started the game by winning the coin toss and deferring to the second half.

The Greyhounds first possession started at the 47-yard line and didn’t long to score the opening touchdown.

However, the Greyhounds only scored one other offensive touchdown, the other came as a pick six.

Perry benefited from a pooched kick and started their next drive with a short field. Their first score came on a pass from Colter Ginn to Andrew Battle for six, and the extra point attempt was blocked.

The Greyhounds maintained the lead at 7-6 which turned out the only time they led in the game.

Perry made some in-game defensive adjustments on the next Greyhounds possession, and intercepted the ball on a fourth down attempt to start their drive on the Greyhounds’ 35-yard line.

They scored their next touchdown behind Ginn, Ahmad Gordon and Corrion Daniels to take the lead at 14-7.

Perry’s offense kept building from there, and they saw a lot of success through the air as well as on the ground.

Their lead swelled to 26-7 until the Greyhounds intercepted Ginn’s pass and ran it back for a pick six.

Perry bounced a field goal attempt off of the crossbar to close the half, but they still had a commanding 33-14 lead.

The Greyhounds only scored seven more points in the second half, and Perry controlled the rest of the game to have a final score of 54-21.

Head coach Kevin Smith said after the game his offense played well but still had a few mistakes to clean up before taking on the Veterans Warhawks this week.

Perry certainly made fewer mistakes against the Greyhounds than they did in last week’s matchup against Houston County.

UP NEXT:

Perry will take on the Veterans Warhawks on Friday, Sept. 8 on Freedom field at 7:30 p.m.
