Only a Few Find It

In his worldwide crusades, Evangelist Billy Graham frequently spoke of two roads that confront mortal man. Dr. Graham’s chosen admonition was: “There is a broad road that leads to destruction and a narrow road that leads to heaven.” This passage is based on Matthew 7: 13-14, which quotes Jesus as saying: “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and ONLY A FEW FIND IT.”

Life comprises a series of choices—the decisions you make and how you treat others. Satan paved the “Highway to Hell” with fleshly temptations and worldly desires. The choices you make determine the road on which you travel.

From the age of accountability, every human is confronted by two different roads—one leads to destruction and hell and or the other leads to salvation and God’s Kingdom. The human race has consistently failed, and most are traveling the Road to Hell. Romans 3: 10-18 aptly describes the attributes of most people: “There is no one righteous, not even one. There is no one who understands. There is no one who seeks God; all have turned away. They have together become worthless. There is no one who does good, not even one. Their throats are open sepulchers. Their tongues practice deceit. The poison of vipers is on their lips. Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness. Their feet are swift to shed blood. Ruin and misery mark their ways. The way of peace they do not know. There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

How does the wayward sinner get off the merry-go-round that leads to hell? First and foremost, the unsaved individual must acknowledge that he/she is a sinner. Romans 3: 23 puts that in perspective: “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Secondly, the lost person must consider the alternatives. Romans 6:23 contrasts them: “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Finally, the sinner must invite Jesus into his/her life. Jesus makes that decision easy. In Revelation 3: 20, Jesus makes this appeal: “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in…” And finally, the lost person can accept the assurance of John 3.16: “For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Is there a shortcut for getting on the right road? Billy Graham provided it: “LET JESUS SHOW YOU THE WAY.”

I was born 9 October 1935 at 800 Ball Street in Perry, Georgia.  During those days,  Perry had a basketball dynasty, winning 83 percent of its games with nine state championships, often playing higher classification schools. My senior year, I was selected as Captain of the All-State team, scoring 28 points in the final game against Clarkston High School (a tremendously tall and talented team).

I married the love of my life in 1955.  She was Beverly Davis.  We were married for 66 years.  Because of advancing age (nearly 90), I had to sell my home and property in Peach County.  I now live with my son, Tim, in Dahlonega, Georgia.  I have another son, Bill, who lives near Canton, Georgia. I miss Beverly very much. I have shed so many tears about the loss of Beverly, I don’t have any left.

I am honored to be writing for my hometown paper, the Houston Home Journal. The Managing Editor, Brieanna Smith, is doing a truly outstanding job! She deserves our highest order of commendation.
