In this week’s column, Jillinda Falen challenges her readers to a few flag trivia questions in honor of the Fourth of July.

I hope everyone had a wonderful and safe Fourth of July.  Here are some flag trivia questions for you to enjoy and test your knowledge:

1.  True or False:  The flag is usually flown from sunrise to sunset?

2.  True or False:  The flag can be flown every day and in every weather condition

3.  What pace do you use when hoisting and lowering the flat?

4.  What must you do before setting the flag at half-staff?

5.  On what day do you fly the flag at half-staff until noon and then raise it to full staff?

6.  When is the only time you may fly the flag upside down?

7.  When is it appropriate to dip the flag in salute during a parade or procession?

8.  When does the flag outside the White House not fly?

9.  How and when should a flag be disposed of?

10.  When hung over the center of a street, what direction should the blue field face?

Answers:

1. True 

2. True, as long as it is an all weather flag. 

3. Hoist it vigorously and lower it slowly. 

4. Hoist the flag to the top and hesitate before lowering it to half-staff. 

5. Memorial Day. 

6. As a signal for help. 

7. NEVER.  The flag bows to no one or no thing. 

8 When the President is not in Washington D.C. 

9. It should be disposed of in a dignified manner such as burning and should not fly when tattered, dirty or faded. 

10.  North on an east/west street. East on a north/south street.

The colors of the flag represent the following: White is for purity and innocence (Liberty), Red is for hardiness and valor (Bravery) and Blue is for Vigilance, perseverance and justice.  There is so much history and wonderful information out there about our American flag and I hope you will check it out on your favorite search engine.  I’d like to thank the Prescott Daily Courier for the inspiration and information for this article.  God Bless America!
