‘Nunsense’ opens season for Warner Robins Little Theatre

The Warner Robins Little Theater kicks off its 54th season Friday with the musical comedy “Nunsense.”

Director Bill Felton said he was doing some research, found out the troupe had not done a musical in a while and came across the play.

“I loved it and submitted it,” he said. “It is a funny read, good clean fun, family fun, and I fell in love with the characters.”

The play was written by author Dan Goggin who grew up Catholic and the underlying message in the play is “Nuns will persevere,” Felton said. “I had no problem casting the play, a good number showed up. They sing and dance well.”

The story is basically this: the Sisters of Hoboken have to bury four of their own. The other 46 nuns died from eating tainted soup. These four are on ice, so to speak, and the nuns have to raise money so they can be buried.

There are comic moments aplenty as the nuns get into money, are threatened with a shutting down of the convent and uncover a long-lost identity.

“It’s quite amusing,” Felton said. “For those who went to Catholic school, there will probably be some memories raised. ‘Yes, my nuns were like that,’ or ‘No, my nuns were not that crazy.’”

The cast is five nuns.

Cheryl Taylor plays the Rev. Mother Mary Regina, Debbie Martin is Sister Hubert, Leslie Castle is Sister Robert Ann, Annie Sinatra is Sister Mary Amnesia, and Emily Edelman is Sister Leo, the ballerina nun. This is Edelman’s first role, Felton said.

“Taylor’s parents basically started the Little Theatre in their dining room,” he said, “and I’ve been involved since the mid-80s.”

Producer is Dot Monahan, and musical director is Dolan Suggs.

The Warner Robins Little Theatre is at 502 S. Pleasant Hill Road. The play opens Friday and runs through July 30. Performances are at 8 p.m. except for a matinee performance July 24 at 1:30 p.m.
