Northside’s Munson commits to Western Kentucky
Arguably the best kicker in the county last season along with former Warner Robins High School and current Fort Valley State incoming freshman Eli Mashburn, Northside High School rising senior Cory Munson has verbally committed to play his college football at Western Kentucky University on Saturday.
Munson may have decided on the Hilltoppers, who play in Conference USA, but early in his recruiting process head coach Mike Sanford (who also has his father Mike Sanford, Sr. on staff as his assistant coach/running backs coach) and WKU were not even in the picture. “WKU was not on my radar until I got a phone call telling me I had a full ride on the table,” said Munson via text on Saturday afternoon. “It was a total surprise and I was excited because it was my first.”
Munson and his parents made their way to Bowling Green on Friday and by the next day Munson had a Division I scholarship in hand and his college decision out of the way. “I finally got to come see the school and the campus is just amazing, said Munson. “The coaches were so welcoming and made me feel at home right away. I really had an amazing time up here and can’t wait for my future here.”
Munson worked out for the coaches and displayed the ability that had a number of college football programs looking to sign him. Too little, too late, Munson’s a Hilltopper until further notice. Sealing this opportunity definitely relieves the stress of the recruiting process,” said Munson. “I still have a high school team that’s first.”
His high school coach, Northside athletic director and head football coach Kevin Kinsler is glad to have his kicker make the decision too. “I am very happy for Cory, he has worked very hard academically and on his skills to be the best he can be.”
“Munson will be an asset for WKU like he is for us because he is accomplished in all phases of the kicking game.”
