Northside MS participates in ‘Be Fit. Be Cool.’
Northside Middle School students have recently learned that a healthy lifestyle can be fun and cool.
Principal Jan Melnick said she heard about the “Be Fit. Be Cool.” through Huntington Middle School.
“I talked with Principal Gwendolyn Taylor and she said her students really enjoyed it and learned a lot,” said Melnick. “Anytime a program can better our students I am all for it.”
The program, according to a press release from the Board of Education, is an initiative of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin and it is to encourage students to be fit and healthy. Melnick teamed up with Dr. Santanu Das, who is a local pediatrician and AAPI member to bring “Be Fit. Be Cool.” to Northside Middle. Besides academics, Melnick said the school’s goal is to make sure to do right by its students and care for their whole being.
“When you have statistics showing that a third of our nation’s children are labeled ‘obese’ by the time they reach middle school, that’s a huge problem,” said Melnick. “If we can start correcting some behaviors like choices in their diets, then it will help the student become a better person in the future.”
During the program, Melnick said the students would have an informative Powerpoint lesson, participate in games and have a dance session to get them moving.
“I hope the students will be inspired to continue making choices to a healthier lifestyle after today’s program,” Melnick said.
