Northside Lady Eagles are soaring at the right time, playing at Valdosta on Friday for potential share of region 1-6A title
With just three region games remaining on their schedules the Northside Lady Eagles and head coach Ashleigh Fox are soaring at the right time. Winners of three of their last four games, the Lady Eagles (12-6, 4-1 in Region 1-6A) are playing their best ball when it counts the most. Northside is in second place in region play behind the Valdosta Lady Wildcats (18-2, 4-0) and two and a half games ahead of both Coffee and Lee County (both 2-3 in region play) at the moment.
At home Tuesday night the Lady Eagles defeated Lee County 47-26 to nearly guarantee themselves a top two spot in the region. That opportunity will come this week on the road against Valdosta on Friday night and at Houston County on Saturday afternoon (3 pm). Winning both or one of those games will lock up a top-2 spot in the region.
The game against Valdosta, the second meeting between the two teams this season, they played earlier this year in Warner Robins on Jan. 11 ending in a 55-41 victory for the Lady Wildcats, will essentially be a battle for first-place in the region. The Lady Wildcats will have three remaining region games following their meeting with Northside (at Lee, v Houston County on Feb. 1 and at Coffee on Feb.2). A win for the Lady Eagles will play at Coffee on Feb. 1 to finish the region season. Defeating Valdosta on the road can leave the Lady Eagles in a tie for the region title.
The odds of Valdosta losing any other of their remaining games are slim if you use the regular season as a measuring stick. The Lady Wildcats are 6-0 at home and 6-0 on the road this season with both of their losses having come to Buford and Florida State University High School at neutral sites. Northside and seniors Kaliyah Little, Stephanie Ruffin and Jayla Brooks will have to take their season and a potential share of the region title into their own hands on Friday night.
