Messing with time wishing we had more
Everybody is always worried about time. There’s never enough of it, especially when we start to look back and examine the important things in life. We all want more time with the people we love and time to do the things we care about. No one has ever been on their deathbed and wished they had spent more time at the office.
Though time is out of our control, humans are always fiddling with it. We try to cram one more thing in our already busy schedules. We gamble with it, eating right and getting some exercise to prolong the amount of time we get in this life. On the other hand though, there are those who bet against their time, hoping a little excess or momentary pleasure doesn’t hurt them in the long run.
There’s always tomorrow to change a bad habit or tackle that addiction, right?
We squander time, whiling away the hours on social media, screaming at the television (either at the news or a sporting event) or dwelling on things out of our control. That’s not to be confused with piddling. Someone who is piddling is engaged in deep thought or taking care of seemingly insignificant tasks that need to be done but can be put off until you have the time.
There are a lot of scientific theories about time. Some say there are an infinite number of timelines creating multiple universes and realities. Some people think that one day we will be able to travel through time and revisit the past or even go into the future. I don’t know about all that stuff. I can only worry about right now. If time travel feels anything like jet lag, I’ll pass.
We are all getting ready to literally play with time this weekend as we adjust our clocks to go back to standard time. I like the fall back, it puts the world on the same clock again. Daylight saving time isn’t recognized by most of the world, mainly only in North America and Europe. It is a relic of the World Wars, of a phony belief that altering our time could save energy.
In reality DST stresses people out and causes a lot of health problems. At some point, farmers began taking the blame, they needed more time to work later in the day I’ve been told. It seems to me that farmers would want earlier light. They want to go home in the evenings too, just like everyone else. I’m not one for conspiracy theories but I blame the golf industry. During the warmer months people who wear suits and sit and desks all day want enough daylight to get a few holes in.
You can’t trust a golfer, that’s why there are no erasers on those little pencils.
I prefer an early sunset. I love the great outdoors and I’ll be out in it every chance I get. But cooler weather and early darkness is a great excuse to sit next to the people you love. The ones you’ll be thinking about when your time is up.
