Meet the Georgia United States Senate candidates – Jon Ossoff
The November 3 General Election is one month away, and among the many seats up for election is the Georgia United States Senate seat, which is currently held by Republican Senator David Perdue. Challenging Perdue is Democratic candidate, Jon Ossoff.
Ossoff is a Georgia native, media executive, investigative journalist and small business owner. He is married to his wife, Alisha, who is an OB/GYN physician and both grew up in Atlanta. Since 2013, Ossoff has served as the CEO of Insight TWI, a 30-year-old media production company that investigates corruption, organized crime and war crimes for international news organizations.
In recent years, Ossoff’s company investigated and exposed sexual slavery of women and girls by ISIS, crooked judges, foreign officials who steal U.S.-funded food and medical aid, contract killers, human traffickers, war crimes and bribery. Insight TWI’s work exposing ISIS war crimes has won particular acclaim. Their 2016 production for the BBC “Girls, Guns and ISIS,” was described by The Sun as “hard hitting and unflinching.” Their 2018 follow-up, “Face to Face with ISIS,” won the One World Media Award. The award jury called the production, “exemplary of popular journalism at its bravest, most insightful and empathetic.”
Ossoff earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and a Master’s of Science from the London School of Economics. Before he began his career in journalism and media production, Ossoff worked as a national security aide for Georgia Congressman Hank Johnson, handling defense, foreign affairs, intelligence and economic policy.
In that capacity, Ossoff said he helped deliver constituent service and federal resources for Georgia, drafted legislative initiatives that passed both the House and Senate, investigated the mass surveillance of American citizens, worked to stop the spread of nuclear weapons, and helped root out corruption and abuse by federal contractors.
In 2012, Ossoff left Congress to pursue his career in investigative journalism, taking over as the CEO of Insight TWI. Ossoff said he is passionate about exposing the abuse of power and fighting corruption, and it’s that passion that has motivated him to run for office.
“Everyone knows that Congress is bought off by lobbyists and powerful trade groups,” Ossoff said. “It’s why pharmaceutical and insurance companies are allowed to rip off our families, it’s why they print money for Wall Street while cutting off unemployment insurance during this pandemic. It’s why it seems like no matter which party is in power, Congress serves folks who can afford lobbyists and spend millions on elections rather than serving the people, and it’s sad to say, Senator Perdue is an embodiment of that system.
“I am fighting for great health care for every American with a strong Public Option and strengthened Affordable Care Act, to defend Medicare and Social Security, for historic investment in clean energy and infrastructure, to lower taxes for working families and small businesses, to defend Roe vs. Wade and the privacy of women’s health care, to enact major criminal justice reform, to get dark money out of politics and end Citizens United,” he continued.
Ossoff shared that the “Washington Super Pack” affiliated with Senate Majority Mitch McConnell has spent more money attacking him than any other Senate challenger in the country. Ossoff believes they are spending the money against him for a reason, because he is willing to call out the corruption in the political system.
“They are also accusing me of wanting to raise taxes and that I am anti-law enforcement,” Ossoff said. “I do not want to raise taxes; in fact, I want to cut taxes, and I am a strong supporter of law enforcement. What I recognize, and I believe what we all recognize, is we need to reform our policing to ensure every American’s rights are protected. It’s worth noting that people’s health insurance is at risk, and they are trying to do away with protection for those with pre-existing conditions such as cancer, diabetes, etc. Senator Perdue voted to let health insurance companies deny us coverage if you’re already sick, and then ran ads across Georgia lying about his vote. An independent bipartisan company, Politifact, fact checked those claims and found them to be false. Again, I am fighting for great health care for every American and will work hard in every way to do so.”
