Mayor Patrick’s health initiative promotes healthy summer
WARNER ROBINS, Ga. – Mayor LaRhonda Patrick created a new health initiative to keep the community active this summer.
The Mayor’s Health Initiative will be hosting events at local parks throughout the community for citizens to attend. All events are free and open to the public and the classes will be taught by an instructor.
The classes will be diverse, including walking trails like Wellston Trail and a stepping class at Perkins field. At some point there will also be a pickleball class at Ted Wright Park where people will be taught how to play the sport with a pickleball instructor.
There will be more classes throughout the summer that will take place two times a week. Mayor Patrick said they are currently working on a calendar for people who are interested.
Patrick said they started the initiative last month due to National Health and Fitness Month. She added the reason she started the initiative is to get people active and healthy. She also added that a lot of the parks in the city are underutilized.
She also said that as someone who has been working a lot since she became mayor, she doesn’t have time to take care of her health and she has seen the same thing happening to city employees. She said that there are over 500 full time employees who work for the city, and they don’t have time to prioritize their fitness because of their jobs, something she hopes to change.
“I wanted to do something in the city that allowed not just our citizens but also our employees to have a chance to take a fitness class for free and also kind of make it a community thing and do something new because I mean a lot of people love fitness in the park a lot of people love doing things outdoors and the city of Warner Robins has not typically done that so we’re doing something new and its gone so well and so well received and I’m looking forward to doing it for the rest of the summer,” said Mayor Patrick
Mayor Patrick’s goal for this initiative is to get people to get healthy and fit and was inspired by Houston Healthcare’s initiative called Houston Healthy. She thought creating a program like their initiative would help people in the community without a cost.
The city is currently working on a schedule of upcoming classes citizens can attend for free. People are encouraged to visit the city of Warner Robins Facebook page: www.facebook.com/CityofWarnerRobins1 to stay updated.
