The man that opened fire on Houston County Sheriff’s Deputies last week has passed away. GBI Special Agent JT Ricketson said that Michael Leatherwood, 47, passed Friday, and an autopsy has been scheduled this week.

On the morning of February 9, deputies responded to a call at a home on Danube Way in Byron. During the incident, Leatherwood opened fire on officers. Leatherwood was struck at least once according to Ricketson, while a deputy sustained a shot to the hand.

Ricketson said the investigation is ongoing.
