A man was taken into custody after being caught attempting to flee from officers on Wednesday afternoon, February 17.

At approximately 12:21 p.m., a Warner Robins police officer and trainee pulled over a Honda Accord on the residential street of Suzanne Drive on the northern side of Warner Robins for a seatbelt violation. As the officers were tending to business, the driver managed to drive away. Choosing not to pursue the driver, they gathered the tag number of the vehicle and later found the car in the driveway of the vehicle owner’s residence on Oklahoma Avenue, just a few streets over from the traffic violation stop. Upon seeing the officers, the driver fled from the vehicle and fired a handgun in a frantic attempt to escape.

Many law enforcement vehicles had been on standby and surrounded the area, blocking off several houses between Carolina Avenue and Utah Avenue in the search for the hiding suspect. In the process, Northside High School was placed on Code Red, shutting down any access to and from the school for the safety of the students and faculty. Parkwood Elementary School, a little farther away from the incident but still within range, was placed on “Code Yellow” while the WRPD promptly took care of the situation.

With the use of a K-9, the Warner Robins Police Department was able to locate and apprehend the suspect who was hiding behind the shed in a nearby yard.

After the situation had been diffused, both schools were placed back in Code Green and were able to resume normal activities. Chief Wagner confirmed in an official police report that no injuries were accrued during the incident.
