Maddox announces he won’t seek re-election to school board Post 6

Houston County Board of Education member Jim Maddox made the announcement at Tuesday’s regular meeting that he would not seek reelection.

“Depending on your point of view this may be good news or bad news,” he said. “What matters most is that I will convey to each of you here today and all of the citizens, and more importantly the students of our county, that I have considered it an honor and a privilege to serve on this board.

“I tried to do my best to represent each student in our system fairly and honestly. I hope in some small way I have made a positive impact.”

Maddox, the Post 6 representative, made his announcement despite still having 10 months left to serve on his term. The reason for that, he explained, was that the qualifying date for candidates had been moved up to March 3, and “that date is fast approaching,” he said.

“I want everybody to know,” he said, referring to his fellow board members, “I have no conflicts, no disagreements that have led to my decision. I’m extremely happy with the direction of our system, with our superintendant and my fellow board members.

“In fact our system is in great shape financially. It is growing. Our students are performing at a high level. We have the best teachers and administrators in the state of Georgia.

“In conclusion I can tell you I know the heart of my fellow board members. They work hard and are passionate about our children. I want to thank them for their support. It has been an honor and a privilege. And I realize now,” he said, setting the stage for a quip, “for the next 10 months I’ll have a new title … ‘lame duck.’”

Board Chairperson Marianne Melnick thanked Maddox for his service, then added, “But we’ve still got 10 months and a lot to do together with him on the board.”

Added Superintendent Robin Hines: “There will be plenty of time for us to appropriately give you thanks for all you’ve meant to this board and your input into those things.

“And one thing I will say at this time about Jim. He is a smart guy. He takes this very seriously.”

Maddox won his seat over Griff Clements. It was a position Clements had held for eight years.
