Liquidating the New Perry Hotel

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Sweet Southern Home estate liquidation has recently taken on a mighty big task. The New Perry Hotel is under new ownership and wonderful and exciting changes are coming! It is being properly restored while retaining its Southern charm. James Farmer will be in charge of the new décor and has retained some of the iconic pictures and furnishings from the hotel for the new makeover. Everything else has got to go!

This will be a rare opportunity for the general public to own a little piece of history. There will be tons of prints, pictures, linens, china, glassware and everything you will find in a hotel for sale. If you have kids going off to college, this will be the perfect place to find desks, dressers, mini fridges, microwaves, coffee pots or things to furnish a dorm room.

The sale will be held on June 26-27 from 7 a.m. – 6 p.m. and on Sunday the 28th from 1-5 p.m. One of the nice things about the sale is that a percentage of our proceeds will be donated to FOPAS and The Perry Area Historical Society. Volunteers from each group will be helping with the sale as well. The leftover items will be going to the Abba House thrift store.

Hotel hospitality has a history in Perry that goes back to 1833, where the Houston County deed books show a Mr. Oliver selling the Tavery known as the Perry Hotel to a Benjamin Fudge in 1833 that also included the following personal property: 16 feather beds, 30 sitting chairs, seven pine tables, 32 cotton sheets, 10 dozen plates and 2,000 pounds of bacon!

I urge you to stop by the museum and enjoy the history and pictures regarding the history of the hotel. One of the earliest pictures is from 1893 that shows people in front of the old hotel.

This very newspaper featured the grand opening of the “New” Perry Hotel June 17, 1925. The owners during that time had realized that the mass production of the automobile and paved highways provided an opportunity to build a bigger and grander hotel.

Perhaps the best known years of the hotel were during the ownership of Nanette and Joe Green, who took over the operation April 1, 1944. The hotel has long been a popular destination for travelers heading to Florida or those seeking a good home cooked southern meal. The phone still rings every day while we are working to prepare the sale with callers looking for accommodations and dinner at the New Perry Hotel!
