Letter to the Editor – Matthew Brown
Dear Editor,
How wonderful social media is.
Yes, I was one of many disappointed that only one of three acts were able to perform at the Warner Robins Independence Day Celebration. The Dazz Band was great, but when they finished the skies took on a familiar look. The announcement was a 30-minute weather delay, but wanted to tell them “you know it’s going to get worse before it gets better.” And it did. Always want to be optimistic, I get it.
Comments made on the Independence Day Concert page reeked of entitlement. No, we were not entitled to this show. Admission was free, so nobody was laughing all the way to the bank with nonrefundable ticket money. I am sure the organizers, the mayor, were not taking great delight in the fact that people had to scramble for shelter from the lightning and heavy rain. They did not go through setting up all of this to not put on a show. Can’t blame the other two acts for not wanting to perform. But it’s easy to throw out nasty comments when you aren’t the one having to make this tough decision.
That storm was planned well before the city of Warner Robins was founded 80 years ago, well before the country’s founding in 1776 or even the New World’s discovery. How far somebody traveled to get there that day doesn’t change that. I thank the organizers for trying, for securing some quality performers.
Sincerely,
Matthew Brown
