Letter to the Editor – James Bryant
Dear Editor,
I’m writing in response to an article written Wed, Apr. 7, 2021 by Jim Rockefeller. He uses his exaggerated lies and false pretenses of being against racism in his article, yet it’s in his blood and in every word. He speaks about George Floyd, O.J. Simpson and finally, Jessie James Askew Jr., whom he also prosecuted over 23 years ago. He calls Jessie’s crime horrific, yet no one was hurt or killed. He lied about people being locked inside a cooler! The record shows that the victims could easily walk out of the freezer. Each victim testified to that fact. Just another exaggerated excuse of Mr. Rockefeller to make the crime worse than it really was. No, I’m not saying it wasn’t a dumb and ignorant crime; I’m just saying no one’s life was ever endangered. Even Jessie’s codefendant testified that the weapons were not loaded. The record also shows that the weapons were not AK47s! Mr. Jim Rockefeller is definitely a good liar and it’s obvious he doesn’t care because he’s part of the good ole boy system. Jessie’s codefendant has been back on the streets of Houston County since September 2007.
Mr. Jim Rockefeller threatened me in an email that he would write an article about the Askew family being racist. His email reads: “Okay you get it. I’m writing an article on how the Askew family is racist. I was called racist in the trial and that was just Mr. Askew fishing for another excuse. Racism has nothing to do with my position. I’ve been very clear that I think there’s a lot of racism in the criminal justice system, but that’s not about him. He just happens to be a criminal who’s black. Glad to get at what your real point is. I’m done with this.”
